The player was born on 26 January 2000 in Gary, Indiana to parents, Winston and Felicia Garland. Apart from him, he has an older sister, Kacie, and four older brothers, Desmond, Kody, Miguel, and Hilton. At the age of six, he with his family resided to Tennessee where Darius went to Brentwood Academy in Brentwood.

Before stepping into NBA league, Darius was a part of Brentwood Academy varsity basketball team while in eighth grade. During his freshman season, his stats were an average 13 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. He also won the (MVP) honors at the King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic in 2015 after securing 23 points.

Two years later, he became the recipient of the 2017 Garland garnered Naismith Trophy High School All-America honorable mention recognition. In the same year, his stats were an average 23.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game and led his team to a 30–2 record and state championship. Then he went to college, Vanderbilt, where the team won by 70-70 against Liberty after he scored 33 points on 6 November 2018.
