Dan was first shortlisted by Manchester United as a candidate for the Technical Director position in August 2018. However, he went on to become the Technical Director of Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion in the spring of 2019.
Later, in February 2022, Ashworth accepted the role of Sporting Director at Premier League side Newcastle United. Newcastle officially announced his departure on 19 February 2024, confirming that he would be joining Manchester United.
Dan was appointed Academy Director at Peterborough United in 2000. The following year, he took on the role of Centre of Excellence Director at Cambridge United, a position he held from 2001 until March 2004.
