Hawkins attended the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in his hometown. After graduation from Duke, he got a full scholarship to study drama at Juilliard School in New York City. There, he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2011. While studying at Juilliard, he received the prestigious John Houseman Award for excellence in classical theatre.
