Her father, Dr. Donald Manson McGillis, is a doctor while her mother, Virginia Joan (née Snell) is a homemaker. She has two sisters named Karen and Kathleen.

With the tall height of 5 feet and 10 inches (1.78 m), Kelly McGillis attended the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California. After her graduation in 1975, she relocated to New York City to study acting at the Juilliard School. She graduated in 1983.

Kelly McGillis then shared the screen with famed actor Tom Cruise as Charlie in action-drama Top Gun, which hit the theatres in 1986. Her other movie appearances include Made in Heaven (1987), The Babe (1992), At First Sight (1999), and The Monkey’s Mask (2000). She has bagged some TV roles as well with One Life to Live (1984) and Private Sessions (1985).

She entered into a civil union with Melanie Leis, a Philadelphia sales executive in 2010. Kelly and Melanie shared a same-sex relationship until they parted ways in 2011.
