Arthel Helena Neville was born on 20 October 1962 to parents Art Neville and Lorraine Neville. Her father Art was a part of one of the musical group of New Orleans, the Neville Brothers and a founding member of The Meters. She grew up with a brother Ian Neville in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Neville with a height of 5 feet 9 inches (1.73 meters) attended St. Mary’s Dominican High School. Later, she went to the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a bachelor’s in journalism.

Afterward, she married Taku Hirano on 28 June 2001. Taku, aged 45 is a Japanese percussionist and recording artist associated with the group Tao Of Sound. They met in 1999 on the backstage of a concert in New Orleans and dated for two years. The couple does not have any children.
