Amber Ruffin thought of pursuing her career as a comedian at her young age. With the hopes of making her dreams true, she initially performed in the local theater productions in Omaha and later relocated to Chicago. In the meantime, her career found a new height when she moved to Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 2008 and began serving as a writer and performer on the improv comedy troupe Boom Chicago.

With the position, she became the first ever black woman to write for a late-night network talk show in the history of the United States.
