Alexander David Bregman was born on 30 March 1994 as a son of Sam Bregman and Jackie Bregman. Both his parents were lawyers. He grew up with sister Jessica and a brother Anthony (A.J.) in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Bregman attended Albuquerque Academy , where he played baseball in a junior team. Later, he went to the Louisiana State University and majored in sports administration. He stands at a height of 6 feet (1.82 meters) and weighs 180 lbs (81 kg).

Alex played college baseball for the LSU Tigers baseball team in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) from 2013 to 2015. There he played 190 career games and  batted .338/.412/.520, with 66 strikeouts and 87 walks in 761 at bats, according to his stats.

Bregman was selected by the Houston Astros with the second pick in the first round of the 2015 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut in July 2016 and ended the season winning the 2017 World Series with the Astros.
