Zach’s father Alex is a baseball coach for the Fort Wayne Diamondbacks. He was a Varsity Baseball Coach at Northside High School. Likewise, his mother Tracy worked as an Intake Coordinator and Sales at James Medical.
In addition to his parents, his family consists of a brother named Alex McKinstry and a sister named Haley McKinstry. Alex played college baseball for the Indiana Institute of Technology.
McKinstry moved from Ohio with his family to Fort Wayne, Indiana before starting elementary school. He graduated from North Side High School there.

McKinstry was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 33rd round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. He began his professional career with the Arizona League Dodgers and later got promoted to the Great Lakes Loons of the Class-A Midwest League.
In the year 2017, he played for Great Lakes, Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, and Tulsa Drillers. After playing the 2018 seasons for the Loons, he began the 2019 season with Tulsa.
Later, Zach got was promoted to the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers of the Pacific Coast League. The Dodgers then added him to their 40-man roster following the 2019 season. Subsequently, he made his MLB debut as a pinch hitter against the San Diego Padres on 16 September 2020.
